Type 1 diabetes develops if the body is unable to produce the hormone insulin and so levels of sugar in the blood are too high because there is no insulin available to remove excess sugar from the blood. It is treated by insulin injections ( diet, and regular exercise).
Type 2 diabetes In people with type 2 diabetes the body can still make insulin, but not enough. It also occurs when the insulin that is produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance, which is what happens when people have syndrome X). In most cases this is linked with being overweight. Type 2 diabetes is treated with lifestyle changes, such as a healthier diet, weight loss and increased physical activity. Tablets and/or insulin may also be required to achieve normal blood glucose levels
